Andreas DAMES [Parents] 1 was born 2 about 1592 in of, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Deutschland. He died 3 before 23 May 1652. Andreas married Mrs. Andreas DAMES about 1617 in of, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Deutschland.

Andreas worked as Gärtner = Gardener.

OCCUPATION:  Gardner at the castle.

NOTES/LOG:
-- I sent a letter to Potsdam 7 December 1998, requesting the marriage record of this person, as well as birth records for all his children.  The check cleared 25 May 1999, but I never received a response.  I wrote again, and received a response.  The second letter was only addressed to Evangelische Pfarramt Potsdam, and since there are 15 churches in town, perhaps the first letter went to another parish other than this one (St. Nikolaikirche, Am Alten Markt, D-14467 Potsdam, GERMANY).  St. Nikolai said they never received my letter.  They asked if I wanted THEIR ST. NIKOLAI, hinting that there were more than one St. Nikolai parishes in town, and that they had 15 parishes.  They said that for family history research, there was a central archive in Brandenburg city.  It appears to be a diocese archive.  They forwarded my letter on to them.  The address is:  Domstiftarchiv Brandenburg, Burghof 11, D-14776 Brandenburg, GERMANY, tel:  011-49-3381-200325.  I will now write to them also, and see if they can help me. I have checked an inventory of church books available, and there is only one parish with records available at the time period covered in my request, i.e., early 1600's: St. Nikolai.  If there are several St. Nikolai's now, not sure of which one, but the Domstiftarchiv should be able to figure it out - SRE 13 January 2001.
-- Received a reply from the Domstiftsarchiv und -bibliothtek Brandenburg (Havel), Burghof 9, D-14776 Brandenburg, GERMANY, dated 8 Jan 2001.  The letter St. Nikolaikirche received from me, they forwarded to Domstiftsarchiv. The archive informs me that my check was cashed by an evangelical church:  "Ihr Scheck über 30,00 DM, den Sie am 07.12.1998 mitsandten is von der Kirchengemeinde eingelöst worden.  Auch die Coupons für Briefmarken lagen nicht dabei."  I'm not sure which parish cashed it, but it was cashed.  Another 33,00 DM was sent to pay the archive, however.  They did some research, and here are the results: "In den Kirchenbüchern der St. Nikolaigemeinde konnten wir im Jahr 1728 [sic 1628] die Taufe eines Matthias Dames ermitteln. In the church books of St. Nikolai parish we were able to find a birth of a Matthias Dames.  The father is not Andreas, but another Matthias. the mother is not given.  We are sending you an extract of this entry.  Siblings of Matthias Dames and the marriage of his parents is not possible, since we don't have much time available for doing research in the church books.  But you can come yourself to our archive and research the church books or hire someone to do it for you".  The extract of the birth is as follows:  "Matthias Dames ist ein Söhnlein gebohren den 25 Martij, getaufft den 30 ejusd. genannt matthias die Paten waren:  Andreas Schultetus. Georgius Francus. Samuel Senstius. Lorents Biering.  Urben Krilen [? nicht eindeutig lesbar] fraw. Jacob Schultzin" = "To Matthias Dames was born a son on 25 March [1628], and baptized on 30 Mar., named Matthias.  The witnesses were:  Andreas Schultetus. Georgius Francus. Samuel Senstius. Lorents Biering.  Urben Krilen [? not very legible] Mrs. Jacob Schultzin", parish records, #16, p. 176a, St. Nikolai parish, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany.  For now, I am putting this into MISC.PAF and doing the work there.  It would be a good idea to see if a Hans was born to this Matthias DAMES also (possibly a couple years earlier than Matthias).  Perhaps a mistake has been made, but until further proof is given, we can't enter this information into the main database - SRE 20 Jan 2001.
-- Saw in my notes some Dames people who married around the right time this person's kids would have married.  p. 376 of FHL 1271032, 1626 (left)?  on the right, p. 389, 1628, Michall Dameß was married.
-- Andreas from Potsdam could have moved to Berlin and had kids (Matthias' marriage lists him as a potter from BERLIN).  Then Matthias, his son, could have moved to Spandau, where he had kids.  Because of GAPS in his kids in Spandau, check in Berlin to see if he had kids there.  Also, Andreas' birth should be searched in 1600, EVEN IF ONE CAN NOT BE FOUND FOR HIS SON, MATHIAS.  WE ALREADY KNOW THE DIRECT LINE.  PERHAPS AFTER ANDREAS IS FOUND, WE COULD DO SOME MORE SLEUTHING TO FIND HIS CHILDREN AND MARRIAGE.
-- Ideas to try for further research:  The birth record found in Potsdam, showing Matthias b. w/father Matthias, has Andreas Schultetus as first witness.  This would have been his godfather, being the first.  It is possible that this is the person mentioned as "Andreas" mentioned in Matthias' marriage.  This would especially be true if his real father were dead.  It could have been an error on the priest's part, who just concatenated the "Dames" surname onto his godfather's last name.  Check parish registers in Potsdam further to see if he also died before the date of marriage of Matthias (23 May 1652).  Get also his occupation, as the occupation of Matthias' father, from his marriage, is Gardner.  Also check for death record of his real father there (Matthias Dames, Sr.), and his occupation.  If a death record is found for Matthias Sr. AFTER 23 May 1652, it is likely, that he was NOT the father of our Matthias, since the father of our person was deceased by then.  Could Matthias' father's name, instead of Andreas or Matthias, be Andreas Matthias or Matthias Andreas?  This would take care of the problem.  Also, check Bürgerbücher in BERLIN, to see if Matthias Jr.'s record is there.  At the point he came to Spandau, he may already have been listed in another Bürgerbuch in another city.  Check also for his father, in case his father also moved to Berlin.  If found, check the Berlin parish he would have lived in, for his death record.  I think it more likely to be found in Potsdam, though.  Check there first -- SRE 21 Oct 2001.
-- I am in the archive in Brandenburg, looking at St. Nikolai parish.  The archivist says that St. Nikolai was the only parish in existence in the early 1600's, late 1500's.  Check this to verify.  It may be possible there were other parishes in existence, just not keeping records.  I did find a Dor. Dames, p. 371a in St. Nikolai, Potsdam records, book 1635-1670, v. 1, who married 5 May 1639.  She would have been born around 1618.  Her father was listed as "Andreas, the Gardner".   She married Andreas Botell.  Couldn't find a death record for an Andreas, though did for a Matthias, in 1631.  Could this be Andreas Matthias?  Check the registers themselves to get his occupation.  I am believing now more that Andreas the Gardner is correct.  I'm just hoping he's not the godfather, listed because the actual father, Matthias, died in 1631.  This is the only entry I find of any other kids to Andreas.  My default will be to leave Andreas as the father, while putting Matthias and his family into the misc. file.  It doesn't make sense, though, that both a priest in Spandau, and one in Potsdam both concatenated the last name of the person being married (Dames) with the first name of that person's godfather (Andreas, if Matthias born to Matthias in 1628 is ours).  Am I missing something here? SRE 24 Sep 2003.
-- At any rate, I looked for death of an Andreas in St. Nikolai, Potsdam parish register indexes from 1593-1700.  Since he apparently had a daughter, b. abt 1618 and a son b. abt. 1626, means that he would have to have been dead by 1717, at the latest.  At any rate, he was supposed to be dead by 1652, when his son was married, SRE 24 Sep 2003.
-- Checked daughter, Dorothea's marriage record, and it didn't say her father was deceased.  However, it did say, that he was a gardner at the castle.  We know from our other records that he is a gardner, too.  This looks like the correct person.  I'll just add the others to the misc. file.
